A few weeks ago, Alison came up with the idea of throwing a surprise belated birthday party for Serena since she wouldn't be celebrating her birthday in Australia this year. She asked me and Trish to help out and I had no idea what to expect since I'd never organised or been to a surprise party before.
I met up with Alison at around 2 ish the day before the surprise and we sat down in the library to discuss the things we needed to buy and how much we'd spend on what. Trish couldn't come cos she had some mandatory nursing thing on but wow, Alison was so organised! We bought all of our supplies before 5 pm and only managed to go over our budget by $4, so we were pretty good overall at estimation ;).
A hundred dollars worth of stuff:
I seriously felt like a mum doing my weekly grocery shopping .. Oh and we had to carry this to the bus stop and then walk about 7 minutes to Alison's house. It was drizzling a lil but so humid - worst weather T.T
We finally made it and met Trish outside Alison's house, then walked over to Trish's to commence Project Food Preparation! (one night before the actual day)
The main thing that was on our minds was making, baking and decorating the cupcakes. Everything else was pretty much just shove in the oven and let it cook, which we'd decided to do in the morning. I also had to make pasta but I'd decided to do that after getting back home, without realising how long we'd actually be ..
We decided on two boxes of cupcake mix - Vanilla and chocolate. For the vanilla one, we dyed half of the batter pink and made a marble pattern on each of the cupcakes using toothpicks and zip lock bags so that the swirl/marble design would be throughout the whole cupcake instead of just on the top.
Left them in the oven to bake for 20-30 minutes then started on the frosting!
Trish had no beater so we had to use old methods and go back to hand mixing LOL.
A very excited Alison.
We got all the frosting ready, mixed in some food colouring and waited for the cupcakes to cool before decorating.
We did so many spontaneous designs and got a lil carried away but weren't extremely happy with them so we gave them a massive makeover. Before and after pics below.
And then this random design I came up with. I think I might use it in future haha.
We ended up with four designs and three trays of cupcakes.
Trish decorating with m&ms.
Cupcakes alone took us from around 5-9 pm! Since it was so late and I still hadn't made pasta yet, we randomly thought up the idea of Trish sleeping over my house. I've never had a sleepover before so I was kinda excited and plus Trish could help me with the pasta! Talked all night and ended up sleeping at like 2-3 am.
And oh, also bought macarons that day for Serena ♥
My failed estimation of thinking five would fit in a row perfectly ..
